Frequently Asked Questions

  • Art therapy focuses on using your natural creative expression to explore and process your thoughts, feelings, emotions, life experiences, and challenges. Creating art around issues you are facing can move the weight you’re carrying from your body into the art. That way you can feel some weight off your shoulders as we explore your thoughts, feelings, experiences, etc. through the artwork you’ve created.

  • There are so many ways to be creative and no way is better than the other! There’s absolutely no art experience needed to take part in art therapy… just an open mind and willingness to try new things! If you find your inner critic coming out during artmaking, don’t worry! We will explore that together. This is a judgment free zone where you and your artwork will be met with support and respect.

  • Absolutely!

In all the hustle and bustle of the day, it’s helpful to be able to easily access therapy services from the comfort of your own space. We will work together to make sure your space is conducive to comfort, safety, and a calming presence. While artmaking, you’ll have the option to listen to music of your choice with calming visuals, provided by the therapist, before we explore your art piece and what’s coming up for you around it. The quality of the art therapy provided will not be any less than an in person session.

  • Not a problem! I will never expect you to go out and buy a bunch of expensive art supplies. We can get CREATIVE and use what’s at your disposal in your own home. Clients have used nature based materials as well as found objects around their house. If you are interested in getting some basic supplies for our sessions together, I am happy to gather a list of very affordable options for you to try.

Local to Austin?? Visit Austin Creative Reuse where you can explore buying some used art supplies at extremely low prices. I’m always amazed at what I find when I visit there!

  • I first want to say that we will take at least the first couple sessions to really get to know each other and build a strong foundation of safety and trust. You will never be forced into working through the hard stuff when you’re not ready or we haven’t yet created the level of comfort you need. Therapy is at your pace.

Sessions are catered to your individual needs. As a person-centered therapist, I’m in the passenger seat while you take the wheel. I give options and let you decide where we go.

For some clients, we do a couple minute check in on how they are feeling either through a quick art therapy directive or verbally. Then I usually do a quick recap of what we worked through last session.

A chunk of the session is typically used for the artmaking portion which can be through a directive I give or client led. If you have an idea… great!! If not, that’s great too!! I will provide art therapy directives that cater to your specific needs.

Lastly, we take time to process verbally through the artwork. Artwork sometimes is created in one session or can be a piece you work on for weeks.

  • Definitely not!

Sometimes you might have a day where you’d rather just talk. Sometimes you might have a day where you’d rather make art and barely talk. Whatever you need in that moment will be honored!

I have my ATR-P and LPC-Associate licenses so I can provide art therapy and traditional talk therapy simultaneously!
